Freshwater Solutions works with a number of New Zealand's key primary industries to design and undertake regular environmental monitoring and effects assessments. We work to ensure environmental monitoring programmes meet the requirements of regulatory authorities while maximising the benefits to resource consent holder. Clients include Miraka Dairy, Fonterra, Alliance Group, Norske Skog, Winstone Pulp International, Open Country Dairy and Wallace Group.


Freshwater Solutions has extensive experience working with landowners, planners, engineers, construction teams and Council on land development projects having completed more than 60 projects over the past 5 years. We identify both opportunities and constraints with regard to the ecology of the site, undertake stream and terrestrial surveys, determine environmental compensation requirements and identify and design habitat restoration. We also regularly undertake fish surveys and fish relocation's to comply with resource consent conditions.


Freshwater Solutions have worked on water supply, wastewater and stormwater projects for city and district councils throughout New Zealand. We have expertise in the evaluation of  discharge effects and development of solutions to manage effects.

We have provided regional councils with advice on fish passage within their waterways and undertaken fish surveys to monitor the success of the techniques used to improve fish passage.


The Freshwater Solutions team has led environmental monitoring and effects assessments for many of Trustpower Ltd’s hydroelectric power stations. We have been involved in the reconsenting of the Roxburgh and Clyde Dams for Contact Energy, compliance monitoring and technical assessments for Genesis Energy and Trustpower, and technical reviews of Project AQUA and Trustpower’s Wairau River hydro-electric scheme as well as small scale hydro schemes on the West Coast, East Coast and the Waikato.


Freshwater Solutions has worked with the Department of Conservation (DOC) on a number of projects including a nationwide review of the river works activities undertaken by regional councils, providing advice on which activities are suitable to be dealt with via global consents.  In a more recent project we were engaged by DOC to create a toolbox of techniques for creating or restoring habitat for New Zealand native freshwater fish.


The Freshwater Solutions team has significant mining sector experience locally and internationally, including baseline environmental assessment of a mine in Armenia, environmental monitoring and effects assessments for Puke Coal, Pike River Coal, Oceana Gold, Couer Gold, Newmont Waihi Gold, Roa Mining, Francis Mining and Winstone Aggregates, and International Finance Corporation (IFC) compliant Environment Impact Assessments (EIA) for Newcrest Mining in Fiji and Sumitomo Metal Mining Company in the Solomon Islands.
